Security Ratings That Meet the Government Standard

SCEC-endorsed safes are approved by the Security Construction and Equipment Committee, the Australian government body responsible for setting physical security standards for the protection of classified government information. If you handle classified or sensitive government materials, SCEC endorsement is not a nice-to-have. It's a requirement.

These safes are tested against rigorous standards for burglary resistance, construction quality and locking mechanisms. Only products that pass this testing process receive endorsement and appear on the SCEC Evaluated Products List.

Who Needs a SCEC-Endorsed Safe

Commonwealth government departments, state government agencies, defence contractors, security-cleared businesses and organisations handling classified information at PROTECTED, SECRET or TOP SECRET levels all require SCEC-endorsed storage. The specific grade of safe required depends on the classification level of the information being stored and the physical security environment it's being stored in.

Non-government organisations handling commercially sensitive information may also choose SCEC-endorsed safes as a benchmark for high-security storage, even where endorsement isn't mandated.

SCEC Grade Requirements

SCEC safes are classified into grades, each corresponding to different classification levels and security requirements. The grade required is determined by the classification of the material being stored and the overall security of the room or facility. Consult the relevant security guidelines for your agency or organisation to confirm which grade applies to your situation before purchasing.

Our safe ratings guide provides general guidance on safe ratings, though specific SCEC requirements should be confirmed against the official SCEC Evaluated Products List and relevant government security policy.

Installation and Compliance

A SCEC-endorsed safe must also be installed correctly to remain compliant. This typically means secure anchoring, appropriate room security and compliance with the relevant government security policy. Purchasing the right safe is the first step; correct installation and ongoing compliance are equally important.

What does SCEC endorsement mean?

SCEC endorsement means a safe has been evaluated and approved by the Security Construction and Equipment Committee against the physical security standards required for protecting Australian government classified information. Endorsed products appear on the SCEC Evaluated Products List.

Do I need a SCEC-endorsed safe for my business?

If you handle Australian government classified information or work under a contract that specifies SCEC-endorsed storage, yes. If you're not subject to these requirements, a high-security safe with appropriate ratings may be sufficient. Confirm your requirements with the relevant authority.

Where can I find the SCEC Evaluated Products List?

The SCEC Evaluated Products List is maintained by the Australian Government's protective security policy framework. It's available through the relevant government security resources. Contact your security officer or agency security coordinator for access.

Can SCEC-endorsed safes be used outside of government premises?

Yes, provided the overall physical security environment meets the requirements specified in the relevant government security policy. The safe alone is one component of a compliant security arrangement.
