Your Backups Are Only as Good as How You Store Them
A data safe is designed to protect digital storage media from fire, theft and physical damage. External hard drives, USB drives, backup tapes, CDs, DVDs and other electronic media require lower internal temperatures to survive a fire than paper documents. A data safe is built with this in mind, maintaining the cool internal environment your digital backups need to survive.
What Makes a Data Safe Different
Standard fireproof safes are rated to protect paper, which ignites at around 177 degrees Celsius. Electronic media can be permanently damaged at temperatures as low as 52 degrees Celsius for magnetic storage and even lower for some optical formats. A data safe maintains internal temperatures at or below these thresholds, where a standard fireproof safe cannot.
If you're storing digital media in a safe that's only rated for paper protection, your backups may not survive a serious fire intact. Our fireproof safes range and dedicated data-rated models are specifically rated for media protection.
Who Needs a Data Safe
Any business that stores backup media on-site should seriously consider a data safe. IT departments, creative studios, small businesses running local backups, accountants and bookkeepers with digital client records, and home users with irreplaceable photo libraries or personal file backups all stand to benefit from proper media protection.
For organisations storing both paper documents and digital media, check whether the specific safe carries a combined rating for both paper and media protection.
Choosing Capacity and Fire Rating
Consider how much media you need to store and whether that volume is likely to grow. Check the fire rating duration and whether the model includes internal compartments or shelving suited to the type of media you're storing. Consult our safe ratings guide for guidance on what different media protection ratings mean.
Can I store paper documents and digital media together in a data safe?
Yes. A safe rated for media protection maintains internal temperatures that will also protect paper documents. The reverse is not true: a paper-rated safe may not protect electronic media.
How do I know if a safe is rated for data protection?
Look for a media or data fire rating in the product specifications, typically UL Class 125. This rating confirms the safe maintains the lower internal temperature required to protect electronic media. Our safe ratings guide explains the different rating standards.
Are data safes suitable for home use?
Yes. Home users with large photo libraries, personal data backups or digital records can benefit from the protection a data safe provides. Models range from compact units suited to residential use through to larger office-grade safes.
Should I rely solely on a data safe for data backup?
A data safe protects your physical backup media from fire and theft. It's an important part of a backup strategy, but it's not a substitute for having multiple backup copies in different locations. A good backup strategy typically includes both local protected storage and off-site or cloud backup.
