When Your Safe Needs to Survive More Than Theft

A fireproof safe is designed to protect its contents if a fire breaks out. The materials used in the construction act as insulation, keeping the internal temperature low enough to protect documents, cash and other valuables for a set period while the fire burns around the safe.

No safe is entirely fireproof, but a fire-rated safe buys time. The rating tells you how long the safe is designed to maintain a safe internal temperature during a fire at a specified external temperature. This is what matters when choosing the right model.

What's Worth Putting in a Fireproof Safe

Documents that are difficult or impossible to replace make obvious candidates: passports, birth certificates, wills, property titles, insurance policies, tax records and business contracts. Hard drives, USB drives and backup media are also worth protecting, though digital media often requires a lower internal temperature threshold, so check that the safe's rating covers data protection.

Cash, jewellery and other physical valuables can also be stored in a fireproof safe, combining fire and theft protection in one unit. If fire protection isn't a priority for you, browse the broader home safes range instead.

Understanding Fire Ratings

Fire ratings are expressed in time and temperature, such as "60 minutes at 1000 degrees Celsius." This means the external surface of the safe reaches 1000 degrees and the internal temperature stays low enough to protect paper for 60 minutes. Paper ignites at around 177 degrees Celsius. Digital media is more vulnerable and typically requires protection to a lower internal temperature.

Our safe ratings guide explains what to look for when comparing fire-rated models.

Combining Fire and Burglary Protection

Many fireproof safes also carry a burglary rating, giving you dual protection. If both theft and fire are concerns, look for a model that specifies both ratings clearly. If you're storing documents in a shared space, a fireproof filing cabinet might be a more practical format for organised document storage.

What is the difference between fire resistant and fireproof?

Technically, no safe is completely fireproof. Fire resistant is the more accurate term. A fire-resistant safe is rated to protect its contents for a specific duration at a specific external temperature. The term fireproof is commonly used but is understood to mean the same thing in a commercial context.

Do fireproof safes also protect against water damage?

Some models include water resistance as well as fire protection. This is useful given that firefighting efforts involve large volumes of water. Check the individual product specifications to see whether a specific model includes water resistance.

Can a fireproof safe protect hard drives and USB drives?

Standard fireproof safes may not reach the lower internal temperature required to protect electronic media. Look specifically for a model rated for data or media protection, or consider a dedicated data safe.

How heavy are fireproof safes?

Fireproof safes are typically heavier than standard safes because of the insulating material in the walls and door. This is actually an advantage for security, as a heavier safe is harder to carry away. Check the weight before purchasing to make sure your installation location can support it.
